Calling Athletes "property" is insensitive

No one ever accused the sports world of being politically correct.  In fact, it is one of the most resistance communities towards change.  As a long time listener of sports radio and avid follower of all sports, nothing makes me cringe more than hearing an announcer refer to an athlete as "the property of."  This usually comes into play when they are discussing which team or organization has the rights to showcase the players skills at a particular time due to a contract.  Call me crazy but I never think of another human being as "the property of," anything.  If sports announcers would think back in their  history to a time when that term "the property of." meant that you were owned by another individual or let's be blunt, master, they would refrain from describing an athletes contract to play their chosen sport for a  selective team in that manner.  Athletes are human beings first and foremost.  When you treat them as things and not people, you should not be surprised by some of the behavior that you witness on and off the court which at times is reflective of how "things" behave.  I often laugh at Mike Francesa and Chris "Mad Dog" Russo from WFAN sports radio in New York when they  say athletes of today are only in it for the money.  What do you expect when athletes are treated as "property" and the minute their skills falter slightly due to the wear and tear of constant use and abuse, they are considered a liability and an alternate, younger, stronger version usually takes their place.  With such short careers, how can you blame athletes for trying to get as much as they can knowing that in the future, they will ultimately be sold off or let go as "property," usually is.
