It is often said around the World that the United States has the toughest Olympic Track and Field trials in the World. But according to at least one Australian writer, Len Johnson, we have the softest
The U.S., who begins Olympic track and field trials June 27th in Eugene, Oregon, operates with a system where the top three make the team and everyone else can go kick rocks. The problem with that is that you have many of the World’s top athletes right here. So, Tyson Gay won the 100 and 200 meters at the world championships in Osaka last year, however, with the competition at the Trials, he very well could miss the top three in both events. He would not make the team.
Then there’s Allyson Felix who was the 200 meter champion last year. She should have no problem making the team for that event but, she’s been running the 100 pretty well and will try to make the team in that event. The 100 is not her best event so, she really needs to take into consideration how her running in that will affect the rest of the team.
So, it seems that the United States’ Olympic qualifiers are pretty simple. Win and you’re in. It’s just not so simple with the competition in this country.
